Music Friday: "Party at Ground Zero"

Last night I watched Everyday Sunshine, which is a documentary about one of my favorite bands, Fishbone. It's a sobering film about a great, influential rock band that has deserved more loot and accolades during the band's long career.

Here's one of their earlier songs of note.

The Primus-Fishbone double bill I saw in Columbia, MO back when I was in college was the best concert I ever attended. It was the tour after they dropped The Reality of My Surroundings

Music Friday: "Fight the Youth"

The video image below is the album cover of the first CD I ever bought, Fishbone's The Reality of My Surroundings, which came out in 1991.

It's still probably one of my favorite albums of all time. And while I'm not an avid concert goer, Fishbone is one of the few bands I've seen in concert more than once.

This song is the opening song on the album, and it's still highly relevant today, especially with the sickening rise of white nationalism and anti-semitism.

For that reason, I'm providing the lyrics below.

Fight the Youth

And now another story of stolen faith and tragic glory.
They claim to be your friends,
but all the while they taunt you with lies.
They tell you what to think and how to face the world around you.
You never question what you know inside is lax and untrue.

But take a look around.
We're not running anymore.
We're in the positive,
but we're ready for the war... for the war

Fight the Youth,
the youth with poisoned minds.
Ignite the truth.
Restore sight to these blind.
Fight the youth, the youth with poisoned minds.
And if they suffer, it's no fault but their own.

And every time I see the hatred that engulfs these children,
it makes me wonder if the quest for peace will someday subside.
I'm not afraid to wage the hopeless battles I must fight.
For I could never lose. I know my cause shines in the light.

Take a look around.
We're not hiding anymore.
Your weapon's cowardice,
and we won`t take it anymore... Anymore.

Fight the Youth, the youth with poisoned minds.
Ignite the truth.
Restore sight to these blind.
Fight the youth, the youth with poisoned minds.
And if they suffer, it's no fault but their own.

And all the feelings of a generation fed with anger
make all the choices for a future where all nightmares come true.
I choose to fight for youth, to fight for truth, to fight for justice.
I choose to heal the wounds of sacrifice made by the children.

Music Friday: "Subliminal Fascism," "Ghetto Soundwave," & "Ugly" with Interview

We were in St. Louis a little while back, and on Sunday of that weekend we did the tourist thing and ate at Blueberry Hill

As we were driving past, I noticed a tour bus, and one of the guys smoking outside it was wearing the iconic black Fishbone t-shirt.

Mrs. Nasty checked on what band was playing that night down in The Duck Room, and it was Fishbone.

So in tribute to that great band that is still doing its thing, here are two songs from Truth and Soul that still certainly resonate. And the performance of "Ugly" and "When Problems Arise" with an interview in between are worth a listen.

Music Friday: "Green Machine"

This week I've been playing the heck out of an old album, Kyuss's Blues for the Red Sun circa 1992.

Back in the 90s, my buddy Roy and I went to a show in Columbia, MO and saw a triple bill of these bands: Kyuss, Biohazard, and Fishbone. It was excellent, and as much as I'm a huge fan of Fishbone, Kyuss was the band that really impressed both Roy and me.

So today I offer up "Green Machine." Listen to it, and you can thank me later.

Music Friday: Trailer for Everyday Sunshine, "Servitude," "Everyday Sunshine," & "Ma and Pa"

One of the best bands I've ever seen live is Fishbone

Pure Energy

I first saw them as part of a double-bill with Primus. And then the second show I went to had them as the headliner of a triple-bill with Kyuss (the precursor to Queens of the Stone Age) as opening act and Biohazard as the second band.

Below I offer the trailer of documentary about the band: Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone. Then we move to the videos of "Servitude" from Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Think He's the Center of the Universe, "Everyday Sunshine" from The Reality of My Surrounding, and "Ma and Pa" from Truth and Soul

Have a good weekend and keep skankin' to the beat

Music Friday: "Sunless Saturday"

What you see above is the cover of the first CD I ever bought. The fact that Fishbone's The Reality of My Surroundings was my first CD makes me think about all the cassettes I had, ones that I now wish I had MP3s of. I once had a massive collection of cassette tapes from The Who, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and many other artists.

[Tangent Alert]

Cassettes, baby, cassettes. It's a fun word to write because the format is an anachronism. Say the word out loud. It has gruff, guttural sound to it, like something the Visigoths would mutter before battle.

Anyway, Fishbone is still around, but the following albums--In Your Face, Truth & Soul, and The Reality of My Surroundings--are the ones I've listened to the most, especially the final two.

The band's sound was/is a fun amalgamation of soul, ska, funk, and hard rock/metal.

I saw the band a couple of times at the same venue when I went to college at Truman. A group of us traveled down to the Blue Note in Columbia. The first show was a Primus-Fishbone double bill, and the second was a Kyuss, Biohazard, and Fishbone affair. At the time, Fishbone playing with Biohazard seemed like a odd pairing, but it worked out.

To properly date the Reality album, this Friday I offer "Sunless Saturday" when the band played on The Arsenio Hall Show.

Remember that guy?

Music Friday (Tuesday): "It's a Wonderful Life (Gonna Have a Good Time)"

PlannedOb's usual Music Friday post will be early since this week since the Nasty family is heading down to Florida. My Mac will stay behind.

But click HERE for a classic song by Fishbone, one of the best "alternative" bands in the 80s and early 90s. The Reality of My Surroundings and Truth and Soul are two excellent albums when Fishbone was at its musical apogee.

This video, however, comes from their earlier days if I remember correctly.

Happy Yule season, folks.
