Music Friday: "This Land is Our Land"

The image above is the album cover to Todd Snider's new ep, Peace Queer.

But click HERE for a performance by Todd Snider from the mid-90s.

The song is from his first album, Songs for the Daily Planet.

The guy is a great songwriter, though this one of his most serious songs.

Many people might remember the classic "B, Double-E, Double-R, U, N, Beerrun."

("All we need is a ten and a fiver/ A car, a key, and a sober driver.")

Check out James McMurtry's "We Can't Make It Here Anymore"

This song hits hard, especially in light of recent economic times. One of the best songs I have ever heard.

Hey, he's playing at Blueberry Hill on the 27th. Too bad I'm no longer in St. Louis. That venue is smaller than the fraternity house's basement.

I'm a big fan of his. I like his wry sense of humor in many of his tunes. "Keep Off the Grass," "Ballad of the Devil's Backbone Tavern," "Just in Case," 'Happy New Year," "Tension," among others are just wonderful songs.

Then he'll hit you with the deep stuff like "You Think You Know Somebody" and "Betty Was Black (and Willie Was White)."

Oh, and that McMurtry song is a great one. I lobbied to get the lyrics of that song used in an argument textbook I'm associated with, but the authors didn't buy my pitch. Their loss.

I can't believe I've haven't used it for a Music Friday yet.

The new cd has a song, "The Ballad of Cape Henry," that's about the Revolutionary War battle connected to the Battle of Yorktown.

I can't think of any other songs that have been written about the Revolutionary War. Anyone? Anyone?
