To mimic Freud, sometimes a hug is just a hug.
As Cowley relates, "Finally, it’s public knowledge what comes off the books for the Cubs after this season. Kosuke Fukudome ($14.5 million in 2011), Carlos Pena ($10 million), John Grabow ($4.8 million), and of course the dead money that is Carlos Silva ($11.5 million) are all free agents."
Combine those salaries together, and it comes to just about 41 million dollars off the books.
The Cardinals can keep Pujols if he is really gonna get a ten-year deal. He'd be worth it for about five or six years up until he's allegedly 36/37. Then there will be four to five years of diminishing returns.
The Chicago National League Ball Club, a team that once was called the Orphans, should use a large hunk of that money to acquire a left-handed power bat and pitching.

Holy Crap, those are some bad contracts!
All of the contracts except Pena's are abhorrent. I still don't understand why Hendry still has a job.
As I watched part of the game last night, Len related that the Cubs have the fewest amount of walks and the most errors as a team. That's just bad baseball.
...for about five or six years up until he's allegedly 36/37.
I'll take the word of U.S. Customs on Pujols' age. A couple hundred Latin American baseball players magically aged shortly after 9/11.
Pujols was not one of them.
And he's now a U.S. citizen, so I'm satisfied that his paperwork is in order.
I'm on board with a huge per-year dollar amount, but I agree that a sensible ballclub will limit the years to 7 or 8. That's not gonna happen though.
travolta's official prediction: Pujols re-signs with the Cards for 10 year/280 million American dollars total.
Yeh, I suspect he'll sign with the Redbirds to make him a career Cardinal and then transition into organization in some fashion.
But don't you think people might want to see the long-form version of all that paperwork?
Calm down, Donald Trump!
If the gov'mnt vouches for it, I should still be skeptical.
