Random Notes from a Crank

Thank the Gods that the Supreme Court struck down President Adolf's scheme to disrupt mail-in voting during the midterms. Still though two of his lackeys were in dissent of the ruling.

Because of Moscow Don's stupid tariffs, Canada is looking for an economic partnership with the E.U.: "E.U. Offers to Make Canada 'Associate Member' as U.S. Ties Weaken for Both."

If I were a Canadian leader, I'd do the same instead of trying to reason with fascist dumbass.

This strip from Rabbits Against Magic show the utter stupidity of trickle-down economics, also known as "voodoo economics."

In other troubling matters, the I.R.S. under the is administration is even worse at collecting taxes and auditing the rich: "Billions in Taxes Go Unpaid. Under Trump, the I.R.S. Won't Say How Much."

Random Notes from a Crank

Where is the concerns from the GOP about the economic consequences of having so much debt?

Thanks to Gary Markstein for the fine political cartoon above.

President Adolf pledged to erase the national debt, and because of the tax cuts for the rich and companies/corporations not paying their fair share and this stupid war with Iran, it is only getting worse.

The hypocrisy of Republicans is astounding.

As I am sure the current dumbfuck administration in DC is reversing all kinds of steps to combat global warming, The New York Times reports that last month was the hottest month on record: "August Ties the Record for Earth's Hottest Month on the Books."

We're all just sitting here living another day in Dumbfuckistan.

If you are someone who actually thinks you'll get $5,000 dollars if the GOP wins the midterms, you're a fucking idiot. I bet you're still waiting for Mexico to pay for the border walls.

I fear I'm stuck in another fantasy football situation in which the best running back doesn't get enough touches. Last year I had Kenneth Walker, who rarely got carries near the goal line. This season I drafted Jadarian Price in the sixth round, and I think the Seahawks will screw me throughout the season by not running Price in the red zone.

Random Notes from a Crank

This political cartoon by Jeff Stahler is a good summation of this presidential administration, especially with the answer of "disaster."

The only time I've listened to Olivia Rodrigo's music is when she was on Saturday Night Live, but I'm heartened by her all-women musical festival that will give all of its profits to Planned Parenthood: "Olivia Rodrigo Stands against Trump as She Raises Money for Planned Parenthood after Defunding."

It'll be interesting to see who wins the Democratic nomination for running for the Senate seat for Maine: "Graham Platter Just Dropped Out. Here's Who Could Replace Him."

I don't really care that much about who gets the nomination. I just want Susan Collins defeated.

It's revealing how one party, the Democrats,  responds to rape allegations compared to the other party, the GOP.

Speaking of rapists, President Adolf has to pay E. Jean Carroll: "Judge Order $5 Million Trump Judgment Be Released to E. Jean Carroll."

Random Notes from a Crank

I discovered a new (to me) cocktail that I'm taking a shine to. It's called the Baltimore Bang

I'm a huge fan of bourbon, of course. But I also love apricots. The current recipe includes 1 oz. of lemon juice, so I may experiment doing without the lemon juice to bring out more of the apricot flavor.

But I'm also a fan of the classic Manhattan cocktail

I was recently alarmed by the high prices for blueberries. I was in my local supermarket, and a carton was over seven bucks.

Apparently, there are a number of factors why they are so high right now: climate change, the lack of migrant workers, and shipping problems. This article from 2025 explains it all: "Why Your Blueberries Are Suddenly So Expensive."

Also, a more recent article in Business Insider cites the Iran War as a major factor for higher grocery prices across the board.

And the New York Times has an article on just that issue because, as an expert says in the article, "Berries are often the first category where consumers notice fuel inflation. When fuel prices rise, those costs move through the supply chain almost immediately."

Other significant factors are President Adolf's stupid tariffs, a weak US dollar, and a lack of migrant workers to pick produce.

The political cartoonist usually isn't this blunt with his work, but I like it.

In what is great news, the dictator Orban lost his election to remain Prime Minister of Hungary: "Orban, Beacon to the Right, Concedes Defeat in Hungary Election."

And the new PM Magyar plans to get back on the right footing and stop the propaganda machine that Orban created: "Hungarian Election Winner Magyar Vows to Rebuild EU Relationship after Stunning Defeat of Orban."

Random Notes from a Crank

I"m guessing this so-called cease-fire in Iran isn't going to last. And what President Adolf has done is damage the credibility of the U.S.

The New York Times has a great analysis of this situation in "A Cease-Fire for Now in Iran, but a Blow to American Credibility."

As one expert states in the article, "There has never been a time when the United States was more distrusted, by both traditional friends and by rivals, as at the present."

Here's a visual representation by Bill Bramhall.

And here's a cartoon by Clay Bennett that sums up his war crimes and financial crimes while in office. He's grifting America for his own personal gain.

Random Notes from a Crank

After reading last week's Existential Comic about David Hume, it's clear to me that I need to work "dullard" more into my vocabulary.

There are way too many of them out there.

Lalo Alcaraz got this right.

The Supreme Court did the right thing. Well, six of the justices did. The three dissenters are simply obsequious ass-kissers to President Adolf.

And Joe Heller is spot on with this one.

The coverup is so clear by the American Fascist Party's Justice department.

The blizzard that shut down the east coast is something to behold: "Millions Under Road Travel Bans as Blizzard Conditions Slam US North-East."

Random Notes from a Crank

Politico reports that there's a massive trade deal brewing among Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Pacific Rim countries: "Carney Constructs a Mega Anti-Trump Trade Alliance."

That forthcoming alliance cannot be for American farmers and manufacturers.

Please join the resistance against this administration.

I know a bunch of people are selling the car decals with a loon as a rebel resistance symbol, but this one works for all the subsequent places President Adolf and his goons are going to terrorize.

I got one on my car and one on my office door.

Pam Bondi is protecting pedophiles. Here's some excellent work from M2Bulls.

Talking about the DOW during the House Judiciary Committee hearing is one of the best examples of a red herring I've seen in a while.

Random Notes from a Crank

Countries are quickly learning that they can strike deals with other countries instead of dealing with the insane trade policies of President Adolf. They call it "'de-risking' ties with the U.S."

Check out the Reuters article about this topic: "World Discovers It Can Hedge US Trade Risk."

These moves make sense. Who wants to negotiate with a senile, crazy person?

I recently subscribed to The New Yorker. I had a subscription years ago. I was inspired to get a subscription again after watching a documentary about the magazine on Netflix: The New Yorker at 100

The Phil Hands political cartoon reveals the hypocritical nature of the American Fascist Party, formerly known as the GOP.

The videos of the two murders just show how despicable ICE and its supporters are.

No one is above the rule of law. And the complicity of members of the AFP in Congress and elsewhere is astounding.

Thanks for Clay Bennett for the above cartoon. Simple yet effective.

Random Notes from a Crank

I was watching an episode of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, and O'Brien used the term "peter out."

Because I usually have dirty mind, I initially thought the term originated from "Peter" meaning a penis. To my thinking, something petered out when a dude couldn't get it up anymore.

It turns out my thinking is way off base if you choose to read "What's the Meaning of the Phrase 'Peter Out?'"

There are about three different possibilities of how the phrase originated, but the one related to the use of saltpeter when mining in the 19th century seems the most plausible.

This nonsense the U.S. is doing down in Venezuela needs to stop.

Lalo Alcaraz has done some fine work below.

Ah, MAGA socialism with the Aid Package that is going to U.S. farmers.

Random Notes from a Crank

The Washington Post has an interesting article about the concept of "gray rocking": "Gray Rocking Is the Way to Deal with Difficult People. Here's How It Works."

I've been using this method for decades. In fact, I used it in a tense meeting this past week.

It's been yet another day that the Democratic representative in the House Adelita Grijalva has not been sworn in because she will vote to release the Epstein files.

She finally got sworn in. Finally.

South Park is doing some great work about the problems with AI. Part of the plot of this week's episode featured the kids generating videos of each other and the "national problem of AI-generated abuse," as an article in The Washington Post describes it.

The deal struck to reopen the government is simply a ruse used by the GOP, which now stands for Grand Old Pedophiles.

Random Notes from a Crank

I'm loving these blow-up costumes that have been at protests across the country, especially the frogs.

If I didn't already have a costume prepared for Mrs. Nasty and me for Halloween, I would get a frog costume.

The cartoonist Nick Anderson has done good work here.

The GOP has basically become a party of Nazi-enablers.

And President Adolf and his GOP enablers are bankrupting the country.

A prime example is how the US is giving Argentina all kinds of money to help out their economy while Argentinian soybean farmers sell their beans to China while American farmers are screwed by not selling any to China.

The grift is at an all-time hight because Moscow Don is demanding that he get paid 230 million because of past cases with the Justice Department: "Trump Said to Demand Justice Dept. Pay Him $230 Million for Past Cases."

We're living in a full-on kakistrocracy

Random Notes from a Crank

Because it's hard to trust anything President Adolf's administration says about the economy and in light of how they are no longer putting out economic data, the Washington Post has an interesting article that shows how the economy is doing poorly based on some significant signs.

Some of the signs are cardboard boxes, Hamburger Helper, and thrifting.

The New York Times has a great article on Nick Offerman: "Nick Offerman Woodworked His Way to Playing the President."

I'm intrigued by the series Death by Lightning

I'm tired of the saying, "Chef's kiss." Just stop saying it, people.

And I feel the same way about "it's been a minute," but I think I've bitched about that stupid verbal construction before on this blog.

This political cartoon by Clay Jones sums up the kind of people who are ICE agents.

Random Notes from a Crank

This political cartoon from Gary Markstein what happened in D.C. and what is now happening in Chicago and Portland.

I'm loving all the TikTok videos showing all the goofiness that is meeting the ICE agents in Portland. The satire runs deep.

The way this administration is going we might as well put a Hitler mustache on the Statue of Liberty.

And very few people believe this government shutdown is the fault of the Democrats  unless you're full-on MAGA. The GOP hold the Executive branch, Congress, and the Senate. They created this nonsense based on LIES.

I recently finished a biography of Napoleon. It was a good read.

He was a brililiant general, and some of his battle tactics are still studied to this day.

His downfall was not listening to his advisors who told him to wait to invade Russia. And by the time he came back from Elba to engage in the Battle of Waterloo, he was past his prime.

President Adolf has Napoleonic tendencies.

Random Notes from a Crank

In a not surprising move, the goons working for President Adolf are removing pictures of slaves' scars from being whipped by their slavemasters: "National Park to Remove Photo of Enslaved Man's Scars."

it's just another aftermath of white supremacy running wild.

Robert Ariail's political cartoon is a good summation.

The Washington Post has an interesting article that talks about tree coverage in cities. It's interactive in that you can put in the city in which you live and see the tree coverage where you live.

In the town I live in, the percentage is 29.2%. Below are the previous towns I've lived in.

Where we lived previously, in St. Louis, it's 32.8%

Tuscaloosa, Alabama comes in at 39.6%

Kansas City, Missouri has tree coverage of 34.1%.

Kirksville, Missouri is only 20.9%.

My hometown of Waterloo, Iowa is at 23%.

The thinking goes, which is somewhat backed by scientific studies, that more trees is better for everyone involved because of shade, oxygen, and better mental health. People tend to be in better moods in a green environment.

Today when I was driving to work, I saw an older lady walking with a stroller. It had a dog in it.

The absurdity of it all. We recently got a little dog, who is a Cockapoo, and he's taking walks right away.

Dogs are not babies.

Random Notes from a Crank

I guess one of advantages of living in a small town is that you're likely not to serve on jury duty.

I got summons last month, and I was supposed to be ready to serve on jury duty the past two weeks ending this Friday. I didn't have to show up.

As a Vikings fan, I had some dark thoughts running through my mind for the first three quarters of the Monday Night Football game. The McCarthy era did not get off to a great start for that portion of the game.

As fantasy football GM who drafted Jordan Mason, I was happy to see that guy running hard.

The touchdown by Aaron Jones was bittersweet because the team I was playing started Jones. Before the TD I was winning. After the TD I lost.

In not surprising news, the reading skills of possible incoming college students is at an all-time low: "Reading Skills of 12th Graders Hit a New Low."

I don't understand the statement by the Education Secretary at the end of the article. She's just a flunky of Moscow Don.

Reading and learning by reading is one of the joys of life. It is one of things that make life worth living.

I've watched lots of videos of farmers complaining about how they're going to lose their farms because of tariffs. But I don't know about the veracity of these videos.

I do know I wouldn't want to be a farmer who grew a lot of soybeans because China isn't buying any from the U.S.

I wish the political cartoon was reflective of reality. But I don't know. Most of these idiots are still supporting President Adolf.

Random Notes from a Crank

The anti-vaccine stupidity will be infectious. Literally.

And it's appropriate that Florida is leading in stupidity by ending vaccine mandates: "Florida Says It Plans to End All Vaccine Mandates."

This political cartoon by Clay Jones sums up what's happening at the CDC.

I'm with Lucy.

I bought some plums from my local Aldi.

I know Dr. Pepper does not contain plum juice, but its plum-like flavor has made it the second most popular pop in the U.S.

It's surprising that plums aren't that popular. They're tasty,

As a bourbon drinker, I'm intrigued by the offerings by Holladay. I remember when I used to live near that area in Missouri, and I traveled to Weston back when it was the McCormick distillery.

But I have a hard time buying a bourbon over forty bucks. It's just booze, man.

My hope is that there are fewer bourbon enthusiasts in the future and supply leaps ahead of demand.

Random Notes from a Crank

I need someone with a culinary and scientific mind to explain to me why chili seems to taste better as a leftover as compared to when you make it.

Sometimes that seems to work the same with red sauce.

Watching the X-Files makes one remember the terrible stylistic blandness of mid-90s American sedans.

Well, the meeting of Moscow Don and Putin went as expected.

President Adolf is still trying to get the taste of Putin's cock out of his mouth. This comic by Clay Bennett sums it up.

This week's Existential Comic about William James is pretty good: "William James and the Train Robbery."

As is expected, Moscow Don doesn't know what the hell he's talking about: "Trump Said the US Is the 'Only Country' that Uses Mail-In Voting. That's Wrong."

I'm still waiting on the release of those Epstein files, bruh.
